Selma Lagerlöf was a Swedish author and teacher. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and is best remembered for her children’s book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils) written in 1906. In 1904, the Academy had awarded her its great gold medal, and in 1914 she also became the first female member of the Academy. Selma Lagerlöf wrote in prose. Her stories characterized by a captivating descriptive power and their language by purity and clarity.
